In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, director Kevin Greutert delved into the intriguing elements of the latest installment in the Saw franchise, “Saw X,” particularly focusing on the post-credits scene.
The primary storyline of the prequel is set between the events of the previous Saw and Saw 2 movies, portraying the sadistic endeavors of John Kramer (played by Tobin Bell) and Amanda (portrayed by Shawnee Smith) as they torment a group of con artists who audaciously claim to have cured Kramer’s cancer. However, for fans who stay glued to their seats after the credits roll, there’s an extra treat. Another iconic villain from the Saw franchise, Costas Mandylor’s Mark Hoffman, makes an appearance alongside Jigsaw in this post-credits scene. The corrupt police officer is seen collaborating with Jigsaw to exact punishment on Henry, yet another deceitful con artist played by Michael Beach.
According to Greutert, the inclusion of Mark Hoffman in the post-credits scene was “probably the most fan-servicey thing that [they] did in this film.” The director acknowledged the ardent Saw fan base’s desire to witness Hoffman’s return and saw the post-credits scene as an opportunity to not only gratify loyal viewers but also wrap up loose ends for various characters while indulging in some fun for the filmmakers. However, this scene goes beyond being just a cameo; Greutert and his team made sure that the setting faithfully recreated the grimy bathroom from James Wan’s original “Saw” film in 2004, the iconic location where the franchise began. The production designer for Saw X, Anthony Stabler, emphasized the meticulous research and attention to detail that went into recreating the set, highlighting the excitement they felt about this iconic replication.
Naturally, the post-credits scene has sparked speculation about the potential for another sequel in the Saw franchise. Still, Greutert remained cautious, refraining from confirming anything outright. He explained that the Saw X team wants to gauge the prequel’s performance in theaters before making any commitments. Greutert noted that each Saw film has typically wrapped up its storyline neatly, leaving room for the possibility of future installments but not guaranteeing them.
As for the future of the Saw series, it remains uncertain. However, “Saw X” is receiving praise as one of the best entries in the franchise to date, with particular acclaim directed toward Tobin Bell’s portrayal of John Kramer.
“Saw X” is currently screening in theaters, providing audiences with another exhilarating and suspenseful chapter in the enduring Saw saga.
